Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Susan traveled and studied throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe before settling in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. A ten year study with a Japanese ink painter in Minneapolis led her to China in 1984 where she studied with masters at the Zhejiang Academy of Art in Hangzhou. In 1998 she began printmaking at the College of Santa Fe. Susan has painted for over 35 years using traditional Asian materials, Ink, Brush, and Paper. Her style has evolved from traditional images to her own abstract expressionistic technique. She currently exhibits at Hole In The Wall gallery, in Ennis, Montana, Touching Stone Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and at Rio Bravo Fine Art in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Artist Statement: "I recently had the pleasure of watching Mary Lance's Documentary of Agnes Martin, entitled, With My Back to the World . Agnes Martin is a most important and influential American artist in my life. The other is my Chinese mentor Zhuo HeJun who lives in Hangzhou, China. The work I do is not only about paint on paper, but about a shared philosophy with other American and Asian painters; simplicity, spontaneity, and a connection with the natural world around me."
