Wes A. Newton was born on November 6, 1962 in Oklahoma City. Beginning in childhood he took to mimicking his father, sketching a variety of things. Developing his vision and mind, the pencil and pad became his playground when alone or when playing outside was not possible. From kindergarten to his senior year in high school he received many awards with the most important being the scholarship he won to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. At USAO he refined his ability further and received many more awards, including the best of show three consecutive years at the USAO Student Art Composition, and a special scholarship to attend the Art Students League in New York. Wes received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1985 and then went to New York to experience the Art League for a period, studying under nationally known artists David Leffel and Dick Geotz, adding more to his foundation of ability. In 1986 he became a firefighter in Oklahoma City, a job that allows him time and the financial means to strive for his goal as an artist. Wes would like to make art a full time joy, but is waiting for his ability to be more refined and is not quite ready to step out on that limb yet: “The fire department is my living, but art is my life. I am just an infant in the art world. As I grow as an artist and the fire department becomes a shoe that hinders my growth and becomes too tight, I will remove it.” Wes is using a few galleries as the main means to exhibit and sell. He also participates in a few competitive shows and enjoys one or two man exhibits. A few years back Wes decided to start studying again under nationally acclaimed artists. In 1992 Wes studied under renowned artist Wayne Wolfe. In 1993 he studied under Jim Wilcox in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Both of these artists are members of the National Academy of Western Art (N.A.W.A.) and have received the coveted award Prix de West. In 1994 he studied with Scott Christianson, a young acclaimed artist making big headway in the national scene. The artists he has studied under in the past and those of the future will make up the ingredients to Wes’s inevitable success. Those that have already invested in one of his pieces have the joy of being part of his life and accomplishments that are sure to be great and far.
